The game was released worldwide during 2015; it was first released in Japan on March 26, and was later released in the PAL region and North America on November 13 and 17, respectively.

Lost Song 's story is based on an alternate timeline of Sword Fine art Online that does non follow the canon storyline of the light novels. It follows series protagonist Kirito and his friends as they play the Virtual Reality Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (VRMMORPG) called ALfheim Online (ALO). The game introduces a lodge named Shamrock, led by scientist and idol 7, who Kirito competes against to be the first to articulate ALO 's expansion, Svart ALfheim.

Gameplay [edit]

Kirito and Sinon talking. Lost Song 's conversation system is presented in a visual novel style, with static images and text.[4]

Unlike its predecessors, which take MMORPG-like gameplay,[v] Lost Song is labeled equally an activity game instead of a role-playing game.[half dozen] It is the first game in the series that allows one to play as characters as well protagonist Kirito; in that location are 19 characters available, though two are merely attainable through downloadable content.[7] Additionally, players tin create their ain character to use in the game's story fashion. Regardless of which character is beingness used, the story volition progress equally if the actor is Kirito.[viii] Each grapheme can wield 3 types of weapons—for instance, Kirito can dual-wield or use a i- or 2-handed sword—and weapons have skills that can be trained to unlock new abilities.[ix]

While in battle, a party consists of three members: the player and ii role player-selected characters. Fighting is performed on the basis and in the air, with the latter allowing the player to motility freely, although players cannot fly in dungeons[10] and are restricted to an distance limit during the early portion of the story.[eleven] Auto-attacking, which is disabled during flight, enables other party members to automatically assail an enemy in close enough proximity without command from the thespian. In combat, the player can assign magic spells and attacks for the other two party members to employ.[9] The type of spells bachelor depends on the race of the grapheme; for example, Salamanders use burn down-based spells, while the sylph apply current of air magic. In a political party, the grapheme that the histrion assigns to perform magic is not targeted by enemies.[12] During combat, there is a "Union" approximate which, when filled, allows players to perform the "switch attack", where one character attacks outset and a party member immediately follows with a 2d assail.[9]

The game has multiplayer, allowing players to appoint in role player versus histrion (PvP) duels.[13] Online capability is also available, with a lobby featuring up to sixteen players who can exist divide into four-person parties to consummate quests,[xiv] such as fighting stronger versions of bosses establish in single-player.[xv] Four-player groups can too participate in PvP as 4v4 battles.[16]

Synopsis [edit]

Setting and characters [edit]

Lost Song takes place in Svart ALfheim, a set up of floating continents in ALfheim Online. Two of the continents are "Flosshilde", an ice-based region,[17] and "Woglinde", a grassy surface area with windmills.[18]

Based in the same continuity as Hollow Fragment, the game follows an alternate timeline from the original series; instead of escaping Sword Art Online on floor 75 like in catechism, the players were forced to progress through the game's remaining 25 floors. Lost Song occurs at the aforementioned chronological point as the Gun Gale Online arc in Sword Fine art Online II, only the characters are instead exploring ALfheim Online, the newest virtual reality MMORPG to be released.[19] Lost Song introduces 3 new characters that play a role in the plot: Nanairo "Seven" Arshavin,[9] an idol and Russian scientist studying virtual reality; Nijika "Rain" Karatachi, an SAO survivor[20] and Seven'south older sister[21] who follows Kirito during the story;[22] and Sumeragi, Seven's babysitter.[23] Seven and Sumeragi are leaders of a guild called Shamrock, 7 being the caput. While Seven is at a lower level, her guild mates are among the strongest players in ALO, with 30 percent of the top 100 players being Shamrock members.[24] Sumeragi is the top swordsman in ALO, having defeated Eugene, the general of the Salamander race, in battle.[25] Rain is a quondam member of the order, being expelled after lying to other society members, followed by capitalizing on the time between her removal and the official de-registration of her guild condition to steal data.[26]

Plot [edit]

After the events of Hollow Fragment and escaping Sword Art Online, Kirito expresses an interest in playing ALO, and decides to join after hearing of Vii's work in the game.[27] Pelting, aware of Kirito'due south feats in SAO, decides to follow him, though he notices her presence. The ii eventually meet when she was attacked by a field monster in a valley, and Kirito invites her to join his adventures.[28]

Kirito begins to express doubts nearly Shamrock and Seven'southward fan club, and decides to nourish one of her concerts.[29] There, he notices that the attendees become motivated to perform 7's interests that she mentions onstage.[xxx] Seven afterwards reveals that Sumeragi is her research partner for a project she is working on,[31] known as the Cloud Encephalon. She describes the experiment as a network that unites ALO players' emotions into one, as seen at the concert.[32] She invites Kirito to assist her in creating it, simply he turns it down, as he wants to bask playing the game with his friends.[33]

Returning to the concluding dungeon, Kirito notices Sumeragi, who challenges him to a duel. After being teleported to a dissimilar area, the 2 begin fighting.[34] With the usage of Skill Connect, a game exploit in which two consecutive Sword Skills are used without delay, Kirito defeats Sumeragi.[35] Kirito advances through the dungeon to confront 7, while Sumeragi and other Shamrock members transfer their Original Sword Skills (OSS) to her.[36]

Upon reaching the boss room, Kirito finds out that Seven had already defeated information technology by herself.[36] While she discusses the results of the project, Pelting questions her actions and how they interfere with her idol status.[37] The three begin fighting, and despite possessing a wide array of OSS, Vii is defeated.[38] An angered Seven proclaims that she will be the one who clears Svart ALfheim and her avatar corrupts as a result of overload from the OSS.[39] As the battle continues, Rain tells 7 that she does not want to fight,[forty] and after Vii'southward loss, Rain consoles her while her HP decreases to zero.[21]

Later on, Seven stops performing concerts ingame, equally Shamrock membership declines.[41] Later on logging out, Kirito meets Rain and learns of the rift between her and Vii that prompted her to play ALO.[20] Back in ALO, Vii meets Rain again; Pelting tells her about their childhood and their split later their parents divorced. After she was reminded of two Russian greetings that Pelting had taught her, Seven's memories return and the two are finally reunited.[42]
